Kate Cagle
Spectrum News 1
A fearless investigator and anchor with over 10 years of experience reporting for television and print, Kate Cagle is proud to wake up with Southern California every day on “Your Morning.” Kate takes painstaking care to create depth in her reporting, tell the stories of the marginalized, and hold elected officials accountable.
Her relentless reporting on the deputy gang crisis inside the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has led to federal, state, and local investigations. The years she spent developing sources inside the department and across the local government gave viewers important context and insight during Sheriff Alex Villanueva’s re-election campaign. She has continued to cover the department as Sheriff Robert Luna took the helm, highlighting his historic pick of Undersheriff April Tardy with important context regarding the systemic issues of accountability and transparency.
Kate’s knowledge and expertise go beyond police accountability. She has also done some hard-hitting coverage of scandals at Los Angeles City Hall. Her interview asking Mayor Eric Garcetti about sexual harassment claims involving a top aid was cited by Senator Charles Grassley’s staff review that found Garcetti “likely knew, or should have known” about the inappropriate activity. Months later, Kate was among the first journalists to release leaked, racist remarks made by City Council President Nury Martinez and others, leading to multiple resignations. Months later, she doggedly followed the impact of the scandal at City Hall.
While holding officials accountable is critical, Kate is most proud of her work covering the homelessness crisis. She’s been a leader in centering people experiencing homelessness to explore systemic failures and challenge city policy, uplifting the difficulties people face on the path to permanent housing and stability. Her report on Project RoomKey closing while the City Council expanded anti-camping zones was cited by elected officials during the debate and contributed to the extension of the program at the LA Grand Hotel.
When she’s not chasing down a story, Kate loves spending time with her husband, Will, son, Warren, and dogs, Oscar and Avery. On the weekends you can find her under a wide-brim hat, perusing local farmer's markets, or relaxing by the ocean.
