Knight Institute Executive Director Jameel Jaffer has been named to a new Aspen Institute Commission on Information Disorder that will address rising challenges of mis- and disinformation online.
The 18-member commission, co-chaired by journalist Katie Couric, cybersecurity expert Chris Krebs, and racial equity leader Rashad Robinson, will first meet April 15 and is expected to issue final recommendations within six months.
“With rising challenges to truth, journalism, and democracy, we need to implement a whole-of-society approach to disrupt the flow of mis- and #disinfo,” wrote Aspen Digital Executive Director Vivian Schiller in announcing the roster of commissioners on Twitter.
The other commissioners include the head of the Skoll Foundation Marla Blow; Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford; former Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Sue Gordon; Jigsaw’s Director of Research and Development Yasmin Green; Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex; Former Texas Congressman Will Hurd; former world chess champion Garry Kasparov; Stanford University Senior Research Scholar Herb Lin; Quadrivium Co-Founder and President Kathryn Murdoch; UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry Co-Founder & Co-Director Safiya Umoja Noble; MIT Center for Constructive Communication Director Deb Roy; Stanford Internet Observatory Founder Alex Stamos; University of Washington Associate Professor of Human Centered Design & Engineering Kate Starbird; and The 19th Co-Founder & Publisher Amanda Zamora.
