The Dissident

The Dissident

Screening of the new documentary, The Dissident, and panel discussion about the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Online

On October 2, 2018, in one of the most heinous attacks on press freedom in recent memory, journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by agents of the Saudi government inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

A new documentary, The Dissident, explores the human rights, press freedom, and surveillance issues raised by Khashoggi's murder. It features never-before-seen surveillance footage and previously secret information about the events surrounding the crime. It interweaves these shocking revelations with interviews with Khashoggi’s fiancée Hatice Cengiz; Agnès S. Callamard, the U.N. Special Rapporteur who led the inquiry into the assassination; Turkish police and prosecutors; cybersecurity experts, including researchers from the Citizen Lab; and Omar Abdulaziz, a young Saudi activist with whom Khashoggi was secretly collaborating.

Panelists will discuss ongoing international efforts to hold the Saudi regime accountable for Khashoggi's murder and the significance of this case for press freedom worldwide.

RSVP to receive a time-limited link to view The Dissident and to attend the live online panel discussion.

The film link will be available for viewing from February 22, 6 pm EST, through February 24, 6 pm EST.

Live online panel discussion: February 24, 7 pm EST.
